Spring has sprung and Summer is just around the corner so many British families are putting together their holiday plans for this year. In the summer of 2009 we saw the rise of what became known as the ‘staycation’ with families opting for holidays at home instead of abroad. An increase in the number of tourists visiting UK beaches took the British tourist board by suprise because of the economic downturn. The ‘staycation’ started initially with many people staying at home and travelling to local tourist attractions and beaches but this eventually spread out to a range of different accommodation.
A short weekend break in a nearby city became popular as people opted to stay in hotels and serviced apartments. A large proportion of those taking short weekend breaks tended to be young couples and groups visiting cities such as Bristol. Plenty of places to stay in Bristol are available to meet the needs of these groups but many UK families want a more rural location for their holiday.
There were a couple of accommodation trends in 2009 that became noticable as it became clear that budget was having an effect on holiday maker’s decisions. Those that had mobile homes or caravans decided to stay in campsites, which is particularly popular in the South of England. People that wanted something a bit more comfortable and had more expendable income decided to rent holiday cottages.
Holiday cottages have always been popular in the southern counties of the UK with areas such as Hampshire, Devon and Cornwall proving to be prime locations for tourists to visit. Each of these individual counties has something to offer. Hampshire has Portsmouth, Southampton and the New Forest. Devon has great beaches and moors while Cornwall is well known for being popular among surfers.
It was reported by various holiday cottage agents that self catering cottages in Cornwall saw a dramatic increase in the number of people staying in them. The rise in popularity of Cornwall holiday cottages can largely be attributed to the number of young people visiting the region after finishing their exams. This is because areas like Newquay cater for younger people with the wide range of extreme sports and night life available to them.
The other more popular destination was the New Forest. It is generally considered that the popularity of New Forest holiday cottages was a result of the number of families choosing to visit the area. This is likely to be down to the wildlife found in the New Forest and the number of healthy activities for children young and old to take part in. The New Forest is also very close to other places that are interesting to visit. These are towns and cities such as Salisbury, which has a large cathedral and Bournemouth with it’s beautiful golden sands.
Looking forward to the summer of 2010 it would seem there is potential for another successful year for UK tourism. Many people are still preferring to put off traveling abroad especially with the threat of strike action from airline staff and many people simply can’t afford it as the UK economy is still recovering from the economic down turn. These are all strong signs of the continued success of the ‘staycation’ in the UK.
