Inverness, a city in the Scottish Highlands is found in some of the most breathtaking countryside in Britain. The city, and surrounding area, are steeped in history, more often than not these witnessed a great deal of human suffering and violence. Happily the city of Inverness has a incredible number of visitor attractions (and the number is continually growing). In the paragraphs below I introduce three visitor attractions in Inverness, Beauly Priory, Inverness Museum and Inverness Castle:
Beauly Priory
It was in the 13th century that Monks, from the Valliscaulian order, first set up a community at Beauly Priory. Unfortunately nobody has the information to the factual date of the foundation of the settlement but it is widely acceptedthat is At that time the patron, and landowner, of Beauly, was Sir John Bisset, whose lands were almagamated with the Fraser’s of Lovat. The French monks, together with Sir John Bisset, are credited with giving Beauly its name, coming from the French for beautiful place (beau lieu). Unfortunately, the priory at Beauly became deserted after the Scottish Reformation of 1582 and blocks of stone were extracted for use in the building of other structures. Today Beauly Priory (ruins) are in the care of Historic Scotland having been handed over to the state in 1913.
Inverness Castle
There have been many structures on the site of Inverness Castle through the centuries, as far back as 1057 there was something there. The first Inverness Castle was attacked by King Robert I of Scotland, and nearly destroyed. The castle which sits on the site today was built and designed by William Burn in 1836. The magnificent red sandstone structure, sits high on a cliff gazing down across the River Ness and the cathedral on the opposite side. King James I(of Scotland) held parliament at Inverness Castle in the year 1427, and summoned all the Northern Chieftains to be in attendance. Shockingly three of these chieftains were later killed for their support of an independent sovereignty.
Inverness Museum & Art Gallery
Found in Inverness town center is the recently refurbished Inverness Museum and Art Gallery which is well worth a visit especially if the weather is wet and windy. Inside the museum it is possible to explore Scottish History and find out how the Highlands are linked with the rest of the world. It is also possible to find out about the people of the Highlands, their culture and traditions. There are several different exhibitions featuring, archaeology, fine arts, costumes, textiles, wildlife and crafts.
