Poble Espanyol de Montjuic is a model village on a hill suburb of Barcelona city, but it is distinct to every other village that you could ever likely to meet. The village lies to the south of the city at an elevation of 192 metres and looks straight down at Barcelona city centre.
Poble Espanyol de Montjuic has been purpose built for Barcelona’s 1929 Worldwide Exhibition and represents what has been perceived as being the typical Spanish city. The village takes its inspiration from the whole of Spain and includes a ground area of just less than 50,000 square metres and has 117 different buildings.
The ambition of Poble Espanyol de Montjuic was to show the characteristics and aesthetics of different building styles from the country’s geographic regions and architectural origin. No less than 1,600 separate towns and villages had been visited and photographed during research for the village’s design and all of the several different building designs are blended together in what was intended to be a seamless mix of Spanish heritage. Poble Espanyol is an amazing and wonderful place that you should visit once.
To make things even more interesting (and impressive), the whole model city is built on a scale of 1 to 1, with every building, street and square being full size. In other terms you can walk around and, in various cases, into the buildings as if it were a genuine living village.
Originally the Poble Espanyol de Montjuic has been only intended to exist until the end of the exhibition, but because of its success and status as “the blue print” of a perfect Spanish city, it remains to this day. You can go there by Bus Touristique Barcelone
The project was undertaken by a number of architects including the “modernist” Puig i Cadafalch, Ramon Reventos as well as Francesc Folguera.
The city sees a beautiful main plaza or alameda and many buildings taken from fifteen of Spain’s autonomous communities including, Andalusia, Asturias, Castilla i Leon, Galicia, Madrid, Murcia and the Balearic Islands. The majority agree that this artificial village is a sight worth seeing and the only occasion you will ever get to watch so many varying style and designs into 1 location.
