America knows amazingly little about our neighbors to the north, Canada, a large nation that knows so much about us and enjoys so much of American pop culture. But, in the following paragraphs we will celebrate our great Northern neighbors and all their contributions to the earth. Canada, in fact, is famous for a lot of things and provides some great and some not so great things to the world. One interesting thing about Canada is that they have more floatplane tour opportunities than America, including a floatplane tour Victoria that both vacationers and locals can enjoy.
Some of the things that Canada has given to the world are of the culinary persuasion and very delicious. One of these food items is Canadian bacon, which no matter how hard anyone tries to convince you otherwise, is still pretty much the same thing as good old fashioned ham, but there is allegedly a difference between the two. The difference, it’s said, between the two pieces of meat is that they are from different places on the ham and are also typically cured differently. Also, Canadians give the world the horribly delicious, heart attack inducing maple syrup to soak our pancakes, so excellent job by them on that one and many thanks Canada.
Canada also allegedly has a fully functional professional football league, although mentioning this fact to people from our country usually results in curious stares and questions about when this happened. But, the CFL (Canadian Football League) has been around since the middle of the last century, 1958 to be exact, which is longer than the NFL has existed in its current state. The league is divided into an East and West division and the eight team league makes up its season by having each team play a varying number of games against each other team in the league over the course of its nineteen week season. In actuality, the Grey Cup, the trophy handed over to the league champion each year, is the second oldest sports trophy in the North American continent behind the Stanley Cup of hockey.
Typically, for some reason or another, most Canadian famous people eventually make it down to America and become famous here. One of these Canadian imports in the world of entertainment is Mike Meyers, former cast member of Saturday Night Live and current actor in some funny and some truly awful comedy movies. Also Canadian, and heaping some amount of shame on her country by being so strange, is pop/punk singer Avril Lavigne, who originally hails from the province of Ontario. Finally, the world famous “actress”, PETA supporter and member, and general famous person Pamela Anderson is from Canada.
Canada, despite going largely unnoticed by a surprising amount of Americans, has in fact contributed some cool things to the world and should be recognized as a worthwhile country. If it weren’t for Canada what would all the people who spend their weekends flipping intermittently on the TV between Canadian football and the Austin Powers movies while eating Canadian bacon soaked in maple syrup do with their time?
